The official opening of the FCH-JU funded BIG HIT project  takes place in Kirkwall, the Orkney Islands, Scotland on Tuesday 15th & Wednesday 16th May 2018. This will be a high profile event to celebrate the official opening of the BIG HIT project as it moves into the operational phase.

The hydrogen project activities in the Orkney Islands include the Surf ‘n’ Turf (0.5MW) and BIG HIT project (1MW) both using constrained wind energy to produce green hydrogen by electrolysis of water.

This EU funded Building Innovative Green Hydrogen Systems in an Isolated Territory (BIG HIT) project will show the important links between partner regions, and the opportunities for hydrogen and fuel cells to maximise the benefits of local renewables, add value and economic impact, and deliver the energy transition to low carbon systems. The Hydrogen Territories Platform will show how regions can successfully replicate the BIG HIT approach in their own territories.

Tuesday 15th May – Grand Launch, Kirkwall. Harbour 11:00, then Pickaquoy Centre Lunch, 13:30 Keynote opening & afternoon visit.

Wednesday 16th  May – Shapinsay Visit 08:00-11:00 followed by Launch of Hydrogen Territories Platform at Pickaquoy Centre 11:30-16:30

The Hydrogen Territories Platform visit and initial meeting on 16th May will be of particular interest to regions and organisations with locally constrained or under-exploited renewable energy sources, and looking to deploy similar hydrogen energy systems and technologies.

This project has received funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 700092. This Joint Undertaking receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe research.
