The Energy Storage on Islands Workshop will bring together leading energy storage industry experts, EU policymakers, system operators, local authorities, and other stakeholders to explore the experiences gained from storage projects on islands (both interconnected and non-interconnected islands) as well as weak grids.
Islands face unique challenges in terms of ensuring a secure and cost-effective energy supply. Many islands have been early adopters of renewables, and have consequently seen some of the world’s first deployments of energy storage projects. These projects not only showcase the diversity of storage technologies and applications, but also serve as fascinating case studies for the broader energy system. Islands offer a peek into the future, setting an example for how interconnected systems could someday integrate very high shares of renewables while ensuring buy-in from local communities.
BIG HIT will be presenting lessons learned from the Orkney deployments in the Energy Storage on Islands: Technologies, Applications, and Business Cases morning workshop. This session will share experiences related to the technical aspects of setting up island projects, including how to select technologies and manage dimensioning/operation given a specific context. It will also cover which applications can be provided by storage, how can they be monetised, and what are the options and choices related to financing projects?
Through an interactive format, speakers and participants will be able to debate the different challenges and opportunities related to storage on islands. Together, they will generate recommendations and solutions that can help the energy storage industry and policymakers support the broader deployment of storage on islands.
